Can Dogs Live Outside In All Seasons? Find Out

Earlier, it was very normal for dogs to stay outside 24/7. But recent information on canines has thrown light on the fact that staying outside during all seasons can be hazardous for a dog’s health.

Staying outside dangers

The dangers can result from use of pesticides and other harmful pollutants, extreme weather conditions, sharp gardening tools, rude neighbors and other wildlife.  Potential danger from weather conditions can do the most harm. For instance when left outside in very low temperatures, dogs such as beagles, Labradors and greyhounds are likely to suffer from conditions such as hypothermia (sudden fall in body temperature) which is quite fatal. Symptoms of this condition include poor coordination, tiredness and shivering which if unattended can lead to coma and ultimately death.

Hot climate can pose other form of dangers such as heat stroke among pets. When a dog suffers from heat stroke, we can see signs such as drooling, panting or the skin turning red. Short nosed dog breeds such as boxers, shih tzus, pugs and bull dogs can be more affected by hot and humid conditions. This condition if ignored can lead to deaths of these pets.

Why you should keep your dog indoors

According to experts it pays to keep your dog indoors instead of leaving it outside for longer periods of time. This is especially essential when the temperatures are extreme. Bigger and hairy breeds can handle colder climate better than their short haired counterparts. If you are staying in a location that enjoys a tropical climate then you should ensure that a shady place is ready for the dog to remain throughout the day. You can also refill its drinking water bowl at regular intervals so that it stays fresh and active without getting prone to infections. Also during occasions which call for the use of fireworks and disaster conditions such as tornadoes and flooding you can keep your dog safe indoors.

Another area of concern which may force you to keep your dog indoors is heavy traffic in your area of residence. However this concern can be reduced to a certain extent by using a personalized dog necklace or leash or keeping it in a fenced in area. Regardless of its size or breed, you should take care not to leave the dog alone outside for a longer period of time.

Although certain conditions make it mandatory to keep your dog indoors, the point to note is that it is not its natural habitat. Dogs have to play and remain outdoors for at least short spans of time during the day to grow well both mentally and physically.
